What are passive and active recovery methods?

Passive recovery is what is done for the client, such as massaging and stretching the muscles.  Active recovery is what the client does, such as working out on their own or with a personal trainer.  Here at PA Wellness, we offer both to our clients so that they can achieve lasting and meaningful recovery all from the comfort of their home, hotel, or office.  We believe in the client taking an active role in the healing process — since no one knows their body better than them. This is why we place a special emphasis on educating the client about their bodies so they can effectively treat them when pain occurs. Our goal is to empower and guide the client to use our recovery methods on their journey to becoming their highest selves.

Our treatment consists of two phases, each designed to meet the client where they are at every step of the way as their bodies progress:

Phase One

In phase one, we work to get the client accustomed to using massage to discover range of motion (ROM) limitations, begin to breakdown the limitations, and minimize the possibility of the limitations returning.  During this phase we work with the client to get rid of trigger points and myofascial adhesions — the two culprits most responsible for muscle pain, but least known to the average person. The rehabilitation period for this phase can be longer depending on the length of time the chronic pain has existed. In addition, we learn together about what brings about the body’s limitations: over or under use, improper body mechanics, long durations of being stagnant, or some combination of all the above.

Phase Two

After gaining control over the body’s problem areas, we then introduce the second phase.  In phase two, we work with the client to develop the healthy habits necessary to maintain full-body wellness.  We work with the client to create custom workout programs designed to recondition and strengthen the muscle(s) of concern. This phase is crucial to creating the proper muscle development necessary to ensure the muscles do not revert to their previous condition.  At PA Wellness, we offer dynamic workout programs that can be completed independently or with the hands-on guidance of one of our personal trainers. However the client chooses to complete this phase, we believe that mobilizing the body is just as critical as  massage to truly achieve lasting and meaningful recovery.
